AmeriCorps*State is a national service initiative operated through each state’s Service Commission.  It is the largest of the AmeriCorps programs and provides grants to local and national organizations and agencies.  Members of the program engage in direct service to meet the needs of the community.  AmeriCorps State members commit to serving 1700 hours at their organizations.  Members receive a modest living allowance, student-loan forbearance, health coverage, and childcare for those who are eligible.  Upon completion of service, AmeriCorps members may receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.

AmeriCorps*State members at KDVA are a part of the Economic Empowerment Corps. Members commit to a year of direct service and provide financial education for survivors of domestic violence and their children.  KDVA’s AmeriCorps*State members serve in one of two positions:

  • Economic Empowerment Specialists provide services to help survivors of domestic violence become financially self-sufficient.  These services include helping survivors with housing and employment needs, offering financial education classes and one-on-one budgeting and credit counseling, offering free tax preparation, and enrolling survivors in Individual Development Account program and micro loans program.

  • Youth Empowerment Specialists develop and implement programming for the children of survivors of domestic violence.  Youth advocates assist children survivors of domestic violence by providing financial education services and classes, organizing educational outings, recruiting volunteers to assist with youth services, enrolling survivors in Youth-IDAs, and providing free tax preparation.
