Kentucky Asset Success Initiative (KASI) began its campaign to increase awareness about the EITC in southeastern Kentucky in 2004. KASI began its work in Owsley, Perry and Pulaski counties where Brookings Institution data showed that as many as a quarter of eligible residents were not claiming the credit.
During the 2005 tax season KASI added a project in western Kentucky – the Owensboro-Daviess County Asset Building Coalition -- and added several rural counties to the southeastern Kentucky projects.
Last year, KASI expanded its reach in western Kentucky by opening tax sites in Bowling Green as well as Warren and Barren counties, where IRS data also indicated a need for increased EITC education and outreach.
In November, the Central Kentucky Economic Empowerment Program joined KASI, adding sites in Fayette, Clark and Harrison counties. This year KASI partnered with three community action agencies to open 10 new sites in Madison, Powell, Henderson, Knox, Butler, Allen, Simpson and Green counties.
KASI also welcomed the Mercer-Anderson Asset-Building Coalition which operates sites in Harrodsburg and Lawrenceburg.
